THE MAKISHI SERIES
Crookes&Jackson have sought out photographing the Makishi in Zambia and
Zimbabwe, in Southern Africa. The performance is an evocative rite of passage -a dance that tells of boys changing into men. It is a masquerade like no other.

On stilts and behind sculpted masks and woven clothes they create other worldlycharacters. In this performance the dancer has no voice - they are forbidden to speak - making them strangers to their families. Strangers to be seen as new men when they return to the tribe as adults.
