For four nights we listened to him roaring long after the sun had set, his calls reverberating across the cayenne coloured dunes. We knew he was out there. Each frosted morning we saw tracks on the side of the road we had driven the night before. He was teasing us. On day five we caught up with him, the elusive Black Maned Lion with his dappled, tousled hair and taught, muscular frame partly silhouetted against the sun-scorched earth.
